Wet Season Scenic Flight Tours of Kakadu National Park

Surprising to many, Kakadu National Park, in fact, stays open all year round. The drier months are usually the most popular times to visit Kakadu; however, Kakadu can be spectacular in Top End’s Wet Season, which runs between November and April.

During this season Kakadu National Park can be drenched by up to 1.5 metres of rain. That’s enough to blanket roughly one-third of the park in floodwaters.

Monsoonal rains drain off the Arnhem Land Plateau and inundate Kakadu’s floodplains. Abundant waterfalls cascade over rugged sandstone stacks as they fill the lush, freshwater wetlands that attract up to 3 million waterbirds each year. Kakadu National Park is home to about one-third of Australia’s 800-plus bird species and one-quarter of the continent’s land mammals!

Take to the air

To accommodate this change in weather, Kakadu Air have updated flights and have released their Wet Seasons flight times (November-April) 2021/2022

  • Flights will cease from Cooinda in the Wet Season. The airstrip at Cooinda is composed of dirt, and its reliability during the rainy season cannot be relied upon.
  • The most popular Wet Season route – the 60 minutes Falls flight will be back! See Jim Jim and Twin Falls in all their full wet-season magnificence as you watch water thundering over the escarpment and surging into Jim Jim Creek below. Please note that the 30 minute Wet Season route does NOT visit the falls.
  • Katherine & Kakadu in a Day tours will operate the Wet Season Itinerary
  • Katherine in a Day will operate Monday, Wednesday & Fridays
  • Kakadu Cultural Experience will be unavailable in December 2021 & January 2022.
  • Due to the Wet, Kakadu Air tries to keep all flights in the early part of the day, finishing up at approximately 3:00 pm to avoid the rolling afternoon storms. Kakadu Air is extremely safety conscious and will never fly into marginal weather. Usually, due to the storms passing very quickly in the Northern Territory, they work around the weather and delay or reschedule the flight.
