May officially starts the 'dry season' in the Top End. The temperatures are cooler, and the humidity drops. Rain becomes less frequent, and rivers start to recede. Warm days and cool evenings bring misty mornings on lily-covered billabongs. This time of year is known as "Yekke." For the local Binnij/Mungguy people, it's not the calendar but mother nature that dictates this change of season. Subtle changes in the environment, such as the bright orange flowers of the Darwin Woolybutt in bloom and dry winds, signal the dry season is here! The long and continuing history of Bininj/Mungguy custodianship of Kakadu National Park is one of the most important things about the Park, and is recognised in its World Heritage Rock Art and archaeological sites throughout Kakadu. Bininj/Mungguy (traditional owners of Kakadu) and the tourism industry have been involved in developing a course, which has been endorsed by the Kakadu Board of Management. It is a permit requirement that all tour guides operating in Kakadu National Park have completed this course.
