Exploring Australia’s Top End with Venture North Safaris is a journey far beyond the ordinary. Our adventures take you deep into the ancient landscapes of Kakadu National Park, across the dramatic stone country of Arnhem Land and along the remote coastline of the Cobourg Peninsula. Discover the majestic gorges of Nitmiluk National Park and wander through the waterfalls, monsoon forests and hidden swimming holes of Litchfield National Park.

Our small group tours are relaxed, immersive and outdoors-focused - so packing smart will ensure you’re comfortable and ready for every adventure.

The Top End has a tropical climate: warm days year-round, higher humidity during the build-up season, and cooler evenings in the dry season (June - September). Practical, breathable clothing and a few key essentials will make all the difference.

Clothing: Stay Cool, Covered & Comfortable

Days on safari are spent exploring wetlands, visiting ancient rock art sites, cruising billabongs and enjoying guided bush walks. Lightweight, breathable clothing is essential.

We recommend loose-fitting cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics that allow airflow and dry quickly.

Essentials include:

  • Comfortable shorts
  • T-shirts, cotton shirts or singlets
  • Long-sleeve tops and lightweight trousers (ideal for sun protection)
  • Casual trousers or jeans (useful for late afternoon mosquitoes)
  • Something warm for the evenings (especially June–September)
  • A wide-brim sunhat
  • Polarised sunglasses (excellent for wildlife spotting on the water)

Long sleeves are often the most practical option in the Top End, protecting you from both the sun during the day and insects at dusk.

Footwear: Ready for Bush & Billabongs

Our itineraries include uneven terrain, rocky escarpments, sandy tracks and opportunities to swim in natural pools.

We suggest:

  • Hiking boots or sturdy runners (depending on your walking confidence)
  • Footwear that can get wet; think reef shoes, sandals or thongs
  • Comfortable sandals or thongs for relaxing in the evening

Comfort and grip are far more important than brand or style.

Health & Wellbeing: Prepare for the Tropics

Spending full days outdoors means hydration and sun protection are essential.

Please pack:

  • High SPF sunscreen and SPF lip balm
  • Insect repellent
  • Electrolytes (particularly helpful in warmer months)
  • Any personal medications

For peace of mind, comprehensive off-road First Aid kits are carried on all Venture North vehicles. We provide suncream and insect repellant at our Cobourg Coastal Camp, however it also recommended to carry your own personal supply as well.

We also provide a reusable Venture North drink bottle for all of our guests on tour!

Miscellaneous Must-Haves

A few extra items will enhance your safari experience:

  • Camera (you’ll want it)
  • Small torch
  • Swimming towel (bath towels are provided at accommodation)
  • A small day pack for daily excursion
  • Binoculars for bird and wildlife watching
  • Reading material for downtime or research
  • Alcohol if your tour is BYO (please check your itinerary inclusions)

The Top End is renowned for its birdlife, dramatic skies and iconic wildlife, binoculars are particularly worthwhile on our cruises and wetland visits.
